MDF, or Medium-density fibreboard, is a type of wood that is made by breaking down other types of wood into fibers of wood to create a more dense form of wood. It can be used for various types of carpentry projects. These types of projects may also involve using a type of glue to hold these pieces of wood together. For these purposes, we will be reviewing various types of glue in order to find the best glue for MDF.
There are different types of features that one should consider when trying to find the best glue for your project. Some of these would be how quickly it sets, how easily it cleans, the water resistance, how strong the adhesion is, and all-purpose application for example.

1. Titebond II Glue, 16 Ounces
Specification
Setting Time | 10-30 minutes |
Non-Toxic | Yes |
Type of Clean-up | Water |
Full Cure Time | 24 Hours |
This glue seems to be your go-to for almost any carpentry project. In 10-30 minutes the glue will be dry, but in 24 hours the glue will be completely cured. It is also non-toxic, so in the event of your child or animal getting into it, there is no need to fear. While the glue is strong and tough, it can be easily cleaned up with water. Although, it is stated that it is not for use underwater, which leads the buyer to believe that it would not hold up too terribly well when in contact with water.
Not only did this glue pass the type II water resistant testing, but it was also the first one-part glue to do so. From these details and specifications, it would lead us to believe that this glue is tough, safe and easy to use, and clean. I think the manufacturer did a good job creating a glue that can get the job done but also takes precautions. For a decent price, you get 16 ounces of glue that will serve its purpose.
The only critique I would have of this glue is that I wish it was more waterproof. If you are constructing a piece of furniture, for example, there is the possibility that it could be used outside. Leaving the object outside could result in it coming in contact with moisture, which this glue would not hold up well against. It could also result in contacting moisture if it was left in a really humid environment, which could even be found indoors.
PROS
- Safe
- Quick dry
- Easy to clean
CONS
- 24 hours to fully cure
- Not for underwater use
2. Elmer’s Products, Inc E7000 Carpenters Wood Glue – Best Budget
Specification
Setting Time | 20-30 minutes |
Non-Toxic | Yes |
Type of Clean-up | Water |
Full Cure Time | 24 Hours |
Our next wood glue is made by Elmer’s. In 20-30 minutes your glue will be dry and in 24 hours it will be completely cured. Like Titebond, this glue is non-toxic, allowing the user to utilize the glue with a bit more comfort and security. This glue is also capable of being cleaned up with water. This product is perfect for carpentry or home repairs because of the drying time and the fact that it is sandable and paintable.
I think the manufacturer did a good job of creating an affordable product that is capable of standing up to most projects a person would want to do with the component of wood. I really appreciate the fact that it’s non-toxic and can be cleaned with water and that you can sand it or paint it. I would like to know more about how well this product would stand up to water. As stated before, a piece of furniture could come into contact with moisture whether it is indoors or outdoors. I would like to know how well the glue will hold up in all different types of environments.
PROS
- Quick dry
- Paintable and sandable
- Non-toxic
- Cleaned off with water
CONS
- 24 hours to cure
- Small bottle
3. Krazy Glue – Best Fast-dry
Specification
Setting Time | 6 minutes |
Non-Toxic | |
Type of Clean-up | |
Full Cure Time | 2 Hours |
I think this glue’s name speaks for itself…it is a bit crazy. With an insane drying time of six minutes and an even crazier curating time of only two hours, this glue would be perfect for someone in a hurry. Although, that drying time might not be all it’s cracked up to be. The description does not state what type of clean-up this glue entails, and the quick-dry may leave some mistakes unchangeable. While a fast dry may prove useful, it can also prove to be a bit alarming in the event of an error or clean-up.
The manufacturer was successful in fast-drying and tough glue. There is no doubt that a project could not be done quickly. I wish it would state whether the glue is non-toxic or not, and if it is not, it likely should not be used in a home that contains children or pets. I also believe for the price, that the bottle of glue should be larger and more plentiful. Lastly, I would like to know how it stands up to water. We are unsure of how this glue is able to be cleaned up and we also do not know what would happen if it was wet.
PROS
- Incredibly quick dry
- Bonds on many different woods
CONS
- Unknown clean up type
- Unknown if toxic or not
- May dry too fast
4. Gorilla Ultimate Waterproof Wood Glue – Best Bond
Specification
Setting Time | 20-30 minutes |
Non-Toxic | No |
Type of Clean-up | Water |
Full Cure Time | 24 hours |
Unlike Titebond, which may not stand up as well to water, Gorilla Ultimate Glue is 100% waterproof. It can dry in 20-30 minutes and will be completely cured in 24 hours. Even though it is waterproof, it can shockingly enough still be cleaned with water, making it very user-friendly and unique. Unfortunately, it is not non-toxic and is advised to keep it out of reach of children and animals. This glue is noted to be great for projects indoors and outdoor because of its ability to withstand moisture.
The fact that this product is completely waterproof is a great feature and very convenient for carpentry projects of a wide variety. The manufacturer was successful in creating a versatile and strong glue to hold together wood and keep it together. I wish that the glue was nontoxic to keep children and pets safe. I also like the fact that even though it’s waterproof it can be cleaned with water.
PROS
- Strong
- Waterproof
- Cleaned with water
CONS
- Toxic
- 24 hours to completely cure
5. Franklin International 5005 Titebond – Best in water-resistant glue
Specification
Setting Time | 10-30 minutes |
Non-Toxic | Yes |
Type of Clean-up | Water |
Full Cure Time | 24 hours |
We finish out our reviews strong with the Franklin International 5005 Titebond. This glue is thankfully non-toxic, so we can rest assured of the safety of nearby animals and our children. It will dry in 10-30 minutes and will be completely bonded in 24 hours. This product passed type II water resistance testing yet can be cleaned up by water.
I appreciate the fact that this glue has most of the features we would like to have in our glue and also is a decent amount of glue for a decent price. As usual, I really like that it is non-toxic and safe to be around children and animals. While this obviously does not mean the user should be careless and allow them around to wet glue, it does leave the user feel better and more assured. I also would like to know more about what would happen if this glue was wet. I liked the character of the Gorilla glue in which it could be cleaned with water but was also waterproof and wish that the rest of these glues had that option as well.
PROS
- Nontoxic
- Good value for money
- Could dry in as little as ten minutes
CONS
- Complete bond could take 24 hours
Conclusion
While all of these glues had their pros and cons, I have selected Titebond II Glue, 16 Ounces as the best glue for MDF. I have made this decision because I feel as though it is the best value for your money and would be the most successful in completing your carpentry project involving the MDF wood.
If the competition was simply the fastest drying wood, we could easily say that the Krazy Glue, Fast Dry Wood Glue was the winner and the best glue, but we have to take into account all aspects of the glue. Titebond is not only safer by notably being nontoxic, but it gives the buyer more glue for their money. If I was working on a project in that I was using MDF wood, I would definitely choose Titebond II Glue as the product that I used.
